Dr. Boutwell works with individuals (children, adolescents, and adults), couples, and families, with particular attention to periods of developmental transition across the lifespan. She is especially passionate about helping individuals, parent-infant dyads, couples, and families navigate the peripartum period, infancy, and early childhood. Her therapeutic approach is grounded in psychoanalytic thinking and guided by a respect for inner life -- the thoughts, feelings, and unconscious processes that shape how we experience ourselves and others. She understands psychotherapy and psychoanalysis as processes that cultivate the conditions for something new to emerge, expanding the ways we understand and experience ourselves, relate to others, and engage in life with greater creativity, curiosity, and vitality, even amid the most challenging experiences.
Dr. Boutwell is involved in teaching and supervision. She serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University's Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, a voluntary faculty member at Weill Cornell's Women's Program, and is a Supervising Psychologist at The Motherhood Center of New York.
