Meet Dr. Cheryl Kathryn BurrisC. Kate Burris, DNP, PMHNP
Dr. Burris is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and founder of Lumina Psychiatry. She specializes in bipolar disorder and has extensive experience treating ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and complex psychiatric conditions. Dr. Burris is dedicated to providing individualized, collaborative care that helps patients feel heard, understood, and supported.
Dr. Burris's interest in psychiatry began at a young age and has shaped her educational and professional journey. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Oregon State University, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Duke University. She went on to earn her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Psychiatric Mental Health from Pacific Lutheran University.
Before becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner, Dr. Burris gained nearly a decade of nursing experience across a wide range of medical settings, including neurology, trauma, cardiology, transplant medicine, and intensive care. She has worked at renowned institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Duke University Hospital, and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Her background also includes working with children and adolescents in residential psychiatric treatment and supporting adults in transitional mental health settings. These experiences have given her a strong foundation in understanding the connection between physical and mental health.
In her psychiatric practice, Dr. Burris particularly enjoys working with individuals with bipolar disorder and complex medication needs. She has extensive experience with lithium management and is committed to helping patients find treatment options that are both effective and sustainable. She believes that successful psychiatric care goes beyond prescribing medication and involves understanding each person's unique experiences, goals, and circumstances.
Dr. Burris takes a holistic approach to mental health, recognizing the important roles that sleep, physical activity, nutrition, relationships, and lifestyle play in overall well-being. She values working closely with therapists and other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive thoughtful, coordinated care.
Through Lumina Psychiatry, Dr. Burris provides telehealth psychiatric services to children, adolescents, and adults throughout Oregon and New York. Her goal is to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment where patients feel comfortable being themselves, actively participate in their treatment, and feel genuinely supported along the way.
Dr. Burris believes that healing starts with being heard, and she looks forward to helping you take the next step in your mental health journey.
