Description of Practice/Services Offered

Dr. Upshur has extensive experience working with individuals across the life-span. She focuses specifically on women’s health, including transition to parenthood , the perinatal period, and work-life balance, as well as work with children and families. Dr. Upshur’s practice areas focus on:

Life stress: Dr. Upshur works with adults, children, and teens on issues that affect daily functioning. These include depression, anxiety, school difficulties, disruptive behavioral problems, parenting challenges, behavioral issues at home and at school, and family struggles – including fertility and preconception challenges, as well as postpartum difficulties, and transition to parenthood.

Adjustment issues: Dr. Upshur also assists adults and children during life transitions, such as separation, divorce, blending families, new schools, new siblings, and managing career and other role transitions.

Trauma-informed care: Dr. Upshur is trained in several evidence-based trauma treatments, and has years of experience in this field.  She specializes in traumas pertaining to family issues, fertility and pregnancy loss, loss and bereavement, and adult and child survivors of trauma.

Dr. Upshur combines psychodynamic approaches along with cognitive, behavioral, and other interventions based on collaborative treatment planning with patients. She uses a flexible customized treatment approach to best meet patients’ needs. She has had training in several specialized treatments which she incorporates into her practice when appropriate.

Areas of Research

Dr. Upshur's research has focused on resilience in the face of adversity, difficult life transitions, changes in family composition, adjustment to adoption, the impact of trauma on families and children, and cross-cultural issues.
