Dr. Charnas is in private practice on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She treats young adults and adults with depression, anxiety, social, occupational, and interpersonal difficulties, relationship and adjustment problems, phase-of-life issues, and maladaptive behaviors. Her training background is in psychodynamic psychotherapy but she works in an integrated fashion, blending theory and utilizing techniques from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Dr. Charnas’ practice has a strong focus on interpersonal relationships. She works both with individuals and with couples at a variety of relationship phases including dating, engagement, marriage, divorce contemplation, and post-marriage.

Dr. Charnas’ work has been published in Psychotherapy Theory, Research, Practice, Training, Training and Education in Professional Psychology, GROUP,  and the International Journal of Testing. She has been interviewed for The New York Times, Elle magazine, The Huffington Post, CBS.com, TheKnot.com, Glamour.com, ArchicturalDigest.com, and Weddings Illustrated and was featured in Newsday and New York Weddings for her work with engaged couples—work that has earned her the title, “The Wedding Doctor.”

Dr. Charnas is active, relatable, and directive, emphasizing patient strengths and adaptive functioning. Treatment is focused on the here-and-now, but historical experiences and relationships are explored with the purpose of gaining insight into present conflicts.
