Julie Ackerman, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Manhattan. She is trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and sees late adolescents and adults struggling with a range of difficulties including depression, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, and psychosomatic illness. She specializes in college/graduate student and physician mental health, and has experience supporting conservatory students through performance anxiety and creative blocks, graduate students through dissertation writing, and physicians through burnout, moral distress, and work-related trauma and grief. She is a consulting psychologist for Manhattan School of Music and a clinical supervisor for City College’s Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program.

Dr. Ackerman attended Boston University and graduated from a dual degree program with a BA and an MA in Philosophy. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study at the Anna Freud Centre in London, where she completed an MSc in Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology. She returned to the US to complete her PhD in Clinical Psychology at CUNY Graduate Center with a dissertation on psychoanalytic dream theory. She completed her predoctoral internship at Pace University Counseling Center and her postdoctoral fellowship at NYU’s Counseling and Wellness Services on their Eating Disorders team. After her training, she spent several years working as a staff psychologist for NYU Langone Medical Center’s Medical Student and House Staff Mental Health Services, and on faculty at NYU School of Medicine, before transitioning to full time private practice.
