Alexandra Mejia works mostly with adults, utilizing an active and hands-on therapeutic approach. She strives to help clients learn to cope with symptoms and come to terms with who they are. She specializes in treating victims and offenders who struggle with mood, anxiety disorders, trauma, and personality disorders.

She first got the idea of going into psychology in high school as, throughout her adolescence and emerging adulthood, she also experienced symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma. As a result, she became more and more curious about what makes people behave the way they do and that curiosity led her to study forensic mental health counseling. Alexandra strongly believes that her varied experience helps her understand her clients on a deeper level and her curiosity helps her in working with her clients; often, they have similar curiosities about themselves.

Alexandras intake process is pretty in-depth and takes two one-hour sessions. Every client is screened for personality disorders, even if they aren't coming in for this reason, because this assessment helps get to know each client’s personality better. Her clients tend to be motivated for change or become motivated throughout the process and this is very important as there is weekly therapeutic homework assigned. If a client is not motivated, it’s obvious and progress is much slower. At the start of each session, the client’s symptoms and behaviors for the past week are reviewed in order to track progress as well as gain insight into any patterns.

In order to be a good therapist, Alexandra believes that continuing education is of the greatest importance as this is still a young field of science. In order to meet her own requirements, she tries to attend certification training, whether in-person or online, 2–4 times a year, and she continually reads clinical literature to keep up with new research and intervention approaches. Additionally, she runs a peer supervision group and attends individual supervision to enhance her own self-care and learn from her peers.
