Maya Williamson graduated from Columbia School of Social Work in May 2014 after spending two years working with adults at risk for homelessness and living with HIV/AIDS. During her time tutoring clients, Maya became acutely aware of the multiple traumas they had endured and how they informed their well-being. Ultimately, it was the passion for this work that led Maya to pursue her Master’s degree in Social Work.
Furthering her understanding of the ways in which trauma shape a person’s lived experiences, Maya provided therapy to survivors of gender-based violence for over six years. It was here that she honed her clinical approach, utilizing warmth, curiosity, and a blend of mindfulness, behavioral interventions, and psychodynamic listening to support survivors on their journey to healing.
In her five years in Private Practice, Maya conrinues to support adults across a myriad of issues including depression, anxiety, PTSD, life transitions, relationship stressors, and grief/loss. A tenet of her work is to aid clients in fostering an awareness of the patterns and behaviors that have emerged in response to trauma and stressful experiences. Maya holds a dedicated space for clients to recognize and preserve the patterns that serve them and rework the painful ones to promote a more fulfilling sense of self.
