Sarah Kaufman, LCSW, is a New York–based therapist who works with adult individuals and couples seeking deeper connection, clarity, and emotional understanding. She welcomes clients of all identities and backgrounds, with particular dedication to LGBTQ+ individuals, new and expectant parents, and those moving through grief or significant life transitions.
Sarah’s clinical focus includes sex and relationships, ethical non-monogamy, perinatal and reproductive mental health, relational trauma, and loss. She works extensively with couples and partners who feel stuck in recurring cycles of conflict, distance, or misunderstanding.
Her approach is relational and grounded in psychodynamic therapy, exploring how early experiences and attachment patterns shape present-day relationships. She also incorporates Internal Family Systems (IFS), helping clients understand and compassionately engage with the different “parts” of themselves. In couples work, she draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-backed model that focuses on shifting negative interactional patterns and strengthening secure bonds.
Sarah earned her Master of Social Work from NYU and completed her clinical training at GMHC, where she worked with LGBTQ+ individuals living with HIV. Prior to becoming a therapist, she earned a master’s degree in journalism and spent over a decade in brand marketing within financial technology startups. She often works with high-functioning professionals navigating demanding careers alongside complex personal lives.
Her style is conversational, collaborative, and direct. She values feedback and believes therapy works best as a shared process. Sarah is committed to anti-oppressive, client-centered care and to creating a space where clients feel both supported and meaningfully challenged.
