Dr. Birnbaum is a board-certified adult general and reproductive psychiatrist in NYC and Westchester with a special interest in perinatal mental health. Dr. Birnbaum offers psychotherapy and medication management with a warm, compassionate, and personalized style.
Dr. Birnbaum believes that fruitful psychiatric care depends on a trusting and warm relationship. Dr. Birnbaum cares for each of her clients with kindness, honesty, and curiosity. Dr. Birnbaum has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating conditions that impact wellness and happiness including depression, anxiety, life stage transitions, relationship difficulties, and grief. She uses psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle recommendations to help her patients find meaning.
Dr. Birnbaum has special expertise in treating women who experience mood changes during fertility treatments, pregnancy, and postpartum with psychotherapy and/or psychiatric medication, when warranted. Dr. Birnbaum is an expert in the use of psychiatric medications in pregnancy. Moreover, she works with women who suffer from mood changes related to menstrual cycle, grief related to infertility and pregnancy loss, trauma related to childbirth and chronic pelvic pain, sexual difficulties, challenges in bonding and attachment to newborn, coping with adjusting to parenthood, mood changes in menopause, and other mental health difficulties during women's lives.
Dr. Birnbaum has experience in advanced psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, sex therapy for couples, emotionally focused therapy for couples, motivational interviewing, and supportive therapy.
