Join us for our 3rd annual in-person networking event to connect and reconnect with members of the WMHC!
This year we will couple our networking with a continuing education seminar during the meal. Upon arrival you will have the opportunity to meet and mingle during our rounds of 3-minute speed networking. Next, sit down to a wonderful Tony’s Di Napoli 5-course meal, during which Dr. Allison Applebaum will be presenting: Stand By Me: Lessons Learned as a Family Caregiver and Caregiving Scientist. Following the seminar we will have an hour to connect and reconnect with members.
Networking
To support making new connections in a fun way, we will be hosting Speed-Networking, toward the beginning of our time together. So polish off your 90-second elevator pitches and bring plenty of business cards!
Presentation
In this talk, Dr. Applebaum shares the most important lessons she learned as a result of her 15-year career in caregiving science and her experience of taking care of her father, including: (1) caregivers are responsible for preserving the identity of care partners and helping them to tell their story; (2) caregivers are members of the healthcare team; (3) the emotions caregivers experience are messengers that can teach them how to live life more fully; and (4) despite suffering, caregiving provides us with an opportunity to connect to meaning and purpose.
Speaker
Dr. Allison Applebaum is a clinical psychologist, caregiving scientist, writer, researcher, speaker, and advocate. She is a Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and the Director of the Center for Caregiving at the Mount Sinai Health System. She was previously the Founding Director of the Caregivers Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the first program of its kind in the United States to provide comprehensive psychosocial care to family members and friends of patients who are in the caregiving role. Dr. Applebaum’s program of research focuses on the development and dissemination of supportive services for family caregivers. She has published over 100 articles, reviews, and book chapters on these topics, and is the editor of the textbook Cancer Caregivers (Oxford University Press, 2019). Dr. Applebaum has received competitive funding for her research, including awards from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the American Cancer Society. She is also the author of the recently published narrative nonfiction book, Stand By Me: A Guide to Navigating Modern, Meaningful Caregiving (Simon Element, 2024).
